Project P.E.A.C.E People–Elephant Action for Coexistence & Ecolog is Becoming Earth Foundation’s human–wildlife coexistence initiative in the Western Ghats
Across forest-edge villages, people and elephants are being pushed into closer contact. For farmers, this means crop loss, sleepless nights, fear, and livelihood pressure. For elephants, it means shrinking movement spaces, food stress, and rising danger.
Project P.E.A.C.E. works to reduce sudden encounters, prevent avoidable deaths, and address the root causes of human–elephant conflict through community knowledge, technology, ecological restoration, and place-based action.
Why This Matters
Because coexistence cannot be built only after conflict happens.
Most responses begin after damage is done:
- After the elephant enters the field.
- After the crop is lost.
- After people gather in panic.
- After fear becomes the only story.
Project P.E.A.C.E. works earlier:

- We identify movement patterns.
- We build early-warning systems.
- We document local knowledge.
- We study forest food availability.
- We support place-based vegetation and buffer-zone planning.
The goal is simple: reduce risk before sudden encounters become fatal.
What Your Support Funds
1. HEC App & Coexistence Dashboard
Turn scattered incidents into real-time community intelligence.
We are developing a human–elephant interaction app and open dashboard to help communities, researchers, Panchayats, and forest stakeholders understand where, when, and why interactions are happening.
2. Early Warning & Sudden Encounter Reduction Fund
Help communities know before danger arrives.
Sudden encounters are one of the most dangerous parts of interaction. This fund supports alert systems, village monitoring, and volunteer coordination
3. Forest Food & Native Vegetation Fund
Solve the root cause, not only the symptom.
Identify what elephants naturally eat, study native species, and work with communities to restore forest food systems in the right locations
4. Corridor & Movement Mapping Fund
Understand where elephants move before designing solutions.
Elephants follow memory and old routes. This fund supports corridor mapping, route documentation, and habitat pressure analysis
5. Model Panchayat for Coexistence
Build one working model that other places can learn from.
A focused pilot where one Panchayat becomes a living example of community-led coexistence, combining dialogue, mapping, and action
